Andrea Bowen, Principal
I am a public affairs consultant with extensive experience in lobbying, policy analysis, and civil rights and economic justice advocacy.
I believe in demonstrating the power of government to improve peoples’ lives, which involves working with communities and those in government at all levels to find solutions that further economic democracy and bring about the end of governmental institutions that harm marginalized communities.
Since starting Bowen Public Affairs Consulting, I have secured funding for: multiple economic justice programs in both NYC and DC; a new LGBTQ health care navigator program in NYC; lawyers to more effectively engage in immigration cases for transgender and gender non-conforming immigrants; multiple clients relating to worker cooperatives, sex workers’ rights, and more. I was recognized as one of City & State Magazine’s 40 Under 40 Rising Stars in 2021.
I began my career as a researcher for the Organizing Department of the Ironworkers Union, where I compiled evidence of workers’ rights violations, and assisted in the planning and execution of labor organizing campaigns.
As a transgender woman, I have taken on the cause of justice for my community, successfully advocating for transgender peoples’ improved access to corrected identity documents, health care coverage, school facilities, and homeless shelters. I was the Executive Director of Garden State Equality, New Jersey’s LGBTQ civil rights organization, where I broadened the organization’s advocacy into economic justice work, and maintained the organization’s financial stability in the wake of the marriage equality victory. Prior to starting Bowen Public Affairs Consulting, I was Senior Policy Analyst at United Neighborhood Houses of New York, where I successfully lobbied for stabilized funding and improved administration of youth employment programs. You can read about more of my exploits on my personal website, which includes press clippings about my work.
